Good Intentions
Private Collection
This sculpture, part of the "Good Intentions Series," investigates idiosyncratic gestures of generosityI witnessed in public spaces while living in Florence, Italy.
The specific inspiration for this piece stems from observing a brief, baffling interaction in which two American girls, carrying designer shopping bags, were approached by an Italian-speaking gypsy. Despite a clear language barrier, the interaction culminated in the girls handing over all their merchandise bags before sharing a high-five and parting ways.
The artwork captures the ambiguity of this exchange, posing a fundamental question about the motivation behind the action: Was this surrender an act of radical generosity, a reaction driven by intimidation or fear, or simply a case of profound cultural and linguistic confusion? The sculpture seeks to immortalize this curious, unresolved tension between apparent goodwill and underlying, unknown motivations.
